Ed Bell, the beloved Marblehead local and longtime treasurer of Marblehead TV (MHTV), had the studio dedicated in his name.
A retired Chief of Bureau at The Associated Press, Bell brought the idea of “Up for Discussion,” a round-table-style program on MHTV talking about all things Marblehead. Bell was the host of “Up for Discussion,” which began in 2012 and ran through 2023.
As one of the founders of MHTV from 2009 to 2024, Bell brought all his energy, imagination, and skills to the studio throughout the years. He is still talked about in high regard by his colleagues today.
The executive director of the studio, Joan Goloboy said Bell “was an icon of Boston programming,” and “[they] were all lucky to have worked with him.” Goloboy added he was extremely well-received by all the viewers of MHTV throughout the years. He was what some would call, a ‘fan favorite.’
Goloboy said her favorite memories with Bell were “when he would come sit in my office and tell me stories of Boston media.”
Alongside his accomplishments in the field of media, Bell was also the Rey Moulton Person of the Year in Marblehead in 2019.
In presenting Bell with the dedication, MHTV President Robert Peck said, “What better way to show our appreciation to Ed Bell than to name the studio [The Ed Bell Studio].” As Peck unveiled the plaque applause rang out throughout the studio for Bell.
Goloboy said the dedication came as a surprise to Bell, which made it all that much sweeter.
Bell stood up in front of the group are shared his appreciation to all of his original panelists on “Up for Discussion,” who were in attendance at the event.
“To have the studio named after me was something I did not expect,” Bell said.
In rounding off the dedication, Peck saod, “When people come into the studio to do their productions, they’ll be coming into The Ed Bell Studio from now and forevermore.”
The plaque will soon be hung in its forever spot on the walls of the MHTV studio.
