The Town Charter Committee will be holding a public forum to gather input as it prepares to present the town’s first charter document.
The town has never adopted a formal town charter. It instead relies on local bylaws and state laws.
The town’s first charter document will aim to respect “Marblehead traditions and long-standing practices,” according to a press release, and is expected to be developed for consideration by 2025.
The public forum will allow the community to give input and receive information as it relates to the charter.
The public forum will begin with a presentation which includes topics such as: the purpose of a town charter, the components of a town charter, the current structure of Marblehead government, the trends of charters in the Commonwealth, as well as the benefits to Marblehead of having a charter document.
After its presentation, members of the community will be able to give feedback to the committee.
According to a press release, the charter will help to bring clarity in helping to define “the roles, responsibilities, and powers of various town officials and boards,” which can “lead to greater clarity, efficiency, and accountability within Marblehead’s town government.”
Those interested may attend the forum on Oct. 22 in the Select Board Room at Abbot Hall, or via Zoom, at 7 p.m.
