Purple Heart Day will be celebrated with a catered luncheon Wednesday, Aug. 7 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Judy and Gene Jacobi Community Center Council on Aging at 10 Humphrey St.
Purple Heart Day commemorates the creation of the oldest American military decoration for military merit. On Purple Heart Day, the brave current and former service members who were wounded or killed in action while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces are honored and remembered.
On June 26, 2024, the Select Board of the Town of Marblehead voted to allow the proclamation of Marblehead as a Purple Heart town. This proclamation by the town demonstrates to veterans that their brave and meritorious service is not forgotten. Recognized by Gov. Maura Healey with a citation honoring the town’s Purple Heart recipients, this is a long overdue honor. With signs erected at the four entry points to the Town of Marblehead, it is a reminder to all roadway system users that the town remembers and honors their service as Americans enjoy the freedom to travel in a free society. This also accomplishes the goal of getting Marblehead nationally recognized as part of the Purple Heart Trail — joining 121 other cities and towns in Massachusetts that honor the service and sacrifice of killed-in-action and wounded service members.
