The Marblehead football (3-4) team accomplished a lot Friday night. The Magicians defeated Danvers, 17-7, extended their winning streak to three games, and picked up their first victory at Piper Field this season.
On fourth down midway through the first quarter, Colt Wales connected with Andy Palmer for 20 yards to open the scoring. Jake Scogland intercepted a pass in the second quarter, and all momentum belonged to the hosts.
As if they needed more of it, the Magicians struck again right before halftime. Wales tossed one to a speedy Brooks Keefe for a 45-yard touchdown (14-0).
Danvers cut the lead in half during the fourth quarter, but to no avail. Greg Matorny’s 28-yard field goal put a lid on it with 4:16 remaining.
With state tournament brackets being released Sunday, No. 14 Marblehead visits No. 3 Middleborough Friday at 7 p.m. The victor takes on the winner of No. 6 Grafton and No. 11 South High Community.
Middleborough is 6-2 with wins against Apponequet, Taunton, Sandwich, East Bridgewater, Rockland, and Abington. Its two defeats came at the hands of Holliston and Norwell. The program has scored 196 points this season, allowing 131.
