It was no home diamond, no problem for Marblehead’s baseball team, which shut out the Beverly Panthers, 5-0, on Tuesday. Chris Cannuscio struck out four and allowed just two hits across six innings. Better yet, he went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI.
Stefan Shepard, Charlie Sachs, and Brooks Keefe (2 RBI) went home with RBI. As a team, the Magicians committed no errors and outhit Beverly, 6-2.

Catholic Memorial 1
St. John’s Prep’s Anthony Romano brought his A-game against Catholic Memorial. Romano went 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and allowing two hits in the win.
The game was tight before the Eagles scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a substantial lead into the final innings. Gavin Gold had an RBI double and a single in the win. Teammate Will Shaheen registered an RBI triple and recorded two strikeouts in relief.

In one of the Northeastern Conference’s top traditional rivalries, Thursday, May 9 came with another dandy. Marblehead escaped Swampscott on its home diamond, 2-1.
The Magicians plated both of their runs in the first inning. Brooks Keefe (2-for-3) and Matt Mahan were to thank for the RBI.
For Swampscott – which actually led the hits category, 4-3 – it received strong showings from Caden Ross (2-for-3, run) and Jason Bouffard (1-for-3), who picked up an RBI in the seventh inning.
Marblehead’s Chris Cannuscio went the distance on the mound, allowing just four hits and punching out nine. Jack Spear went six innings for Swampscott, striking out six and conceding just three hits. Cannuscio struck out the final two batters with a runner on second, and both pitchers walked just one batter apiece.

It was a happy Thursday (May 9) for The Prep, which knocked off top-ranked (MIAA) BC High in a 5-1 final. Hits came from Gavin Gold, Will Shaheen (2 RBI), and Aidan Driscoll, while Braeden Hurley (4 K) tossed a strong game across six innings.

Marblehead’s Ruby Calienes (4 H, 0 BB, 7 K) pitched her first game of the spring and went home with a win against Masconomet. Tessa Francis faced the last four batters of the evening, getting the save on no hits and two punchouts.
Catcher Luka Bornhorst went 2-for-3 with two runs, Hailey Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a big RBI in the seventh inning, and Isabel Mortensen went 1-for-4 with two RBI for the Magicians, who jumped to 12-2.

The Prep tripled up St. John’s Shrewsbury in an early-afternoon contest on the road. Brendan Powers scored three goals, Jake Vana had a goal and three assists, Jack Doherty won 10 of 12 face-offs, and Austin Kitces made seven saves to lead the Eagles (13-2).

The Magicians (4-10) fell to Masconomet on the road Monday afternoon. Masco led, 7-1, at half, and didn’t allow Marblehead to get back into the game in the second half.
Maddie Forbes did a bit of everything for the Magicians, scoring two goals, providing two assists, and picking up three ground balls. Ramona Gillett scored and assisted, while freshman Kathryn Commoss scored two goals. Freshman goalie Molly Bullard recorded seven saves in the loss.

Peabody led just 7-4 at halftime, then turned up the heat in the second half, soundly defeating the Magicians behind Madi Barrett’s six goals and three assists. She also secured her 200th career point.
Chipping in were Ally Bettencourt (5 goals, 3 assists), Brooke Lomasney (3 goals, 2 assists), Connie Patturelli (goal), and Victoria Vaz (assist). Caitlin Snow made nine saves, and Peabody upped its record to 11-2 (11-0 Northeastern Conference).
As for Marblehead (4-9), there were plenty of positives. Kathryn Commoss continued her stellar spring with four goals, followed by Maddie Forbes (goal), Ramona Gillett (2 assists), Gretchen Smith (goal), Avery Wysor (ground ball), Sydney Hamilton (ground ball), and Molly Bullard (13 saves).

A traditional rivalry made its way to Marblehead on Tuesday, with its Magicians taking care of the Big Blue, 4-1, to move to 10-3 (8-0 Northeastern Conference). Etan Farfel and TJ Kelly submitted singles wins, while the duos of Jayden Janock-Leo Winocour and Austin Bacon-Ty Cooper did so in doubles.

For the 30th time in 34 years, the St. John’s Prep Eagles are Catholic Conference champions. Head coach Mark Metropolis and his squad are a perfect 13-0 overall and 9-0 in the league.
The Eagles hosted Malden Catholic and the Lancers suffered a similar fate that most teams have experienced going up against St. John’s Prep, a 5-0 sweep.
It was a near-perfect overall match as the Eagles dropped just one set across the five matches.
In first singles, John DeAngelis defeated Jack Burgess 6-0, 6-0, while in second singles Jack Prokopis took care of Nan Dinh 6-0, 6-0 to get the Eagles off to a commanding start.
Third singles, Luke Free, was too much for Lucas Wang, defeating him in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
First doubles, Wade Evits and Charlie Weld, showed their chemistry beating Matteo Peledge and Drew Rynak 6-0, 6-1.
Second doubles, Chris Melville and Ciaran de Buy Wenniger, defeated Julian Cuper and James Guild 6-0, 6-0.
Earlier this season, Metropolis earned his 500th win at St. John’s Prep against Wellesley High and now he adds another Catholic Conference title to his already impressive resume.

No Mika Garber, no problem for the Marblehead boys tennis team, which showed off its depth with a 5-0 win against Latin Academy on a sunny Thursday. Etan Farfel, Jayden Janock, and TJ Kelly registered singles wins, while the combinations of Leo Winocour-Austin Bacon and Anthony Vizy-Ty Cooper added more for the 9-3 Magicians.
“Marblehead’s No. 1 player was injured during the warm-up and the rest of the team stepped up and played a very competitive match,” said coach Elisabeth Foukal. “I couldn’t be more proud of how our team adjusted to the lineup at the last minute and came through for a convincing win.”

On Senior Day, the Magicians got the job done against the Tanners. First singles Maddie Conlon won 6-3, 6-4, second singles Aviva Bornstein won 6-2, 6-1, and third singles Sami Dosch won 6-2, 6-1 to lead Marblehead.
The first doubles senior duo of Aoife Bresnahan and Lucia Levin remained undefeated in conference play, winning 6-1, 6-1. Second doubles Lani Gilmore and Reese Friedman picked up the win 6-2, 6-1.
“It was a perfect tennis weather day and also super special that we got to celebrate our six seniors, along with recognizing Peabody’s seniors as well,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “As a coach, it was great to see the sportsmanship shown by both teams and mutual admiration for its upcoming graduates. It epitomizes what playing high school tennis is all about.”

Marblehead received its lone point from the first doubles team of Lucia Levin and Lani Gilmore. Sami Dosch, in third singles, nearly pulled off an upset, but lost in games of 2-6, 7-6, 5-7.
“Newburyport is, clearly, a very talented team,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “First Doubles stayed consistent and also aggressive to stay on their winning track, and for the second time this week, Sami lost a super close match that could have gone either way. We are looking to finish the season strong and keep our ranking at a decent level.”

Marblehead squeaked by Boston Latin – and it wasn’t easy. First and second singles fell for the Magicians, but Sami Dosch picked up a hard-earned win at third singles. From there, both doubles duos (Lucia Levin and Lani Gilmore; Reese Friedman and Nina Johnson) closed out the match with wins.
TRACK AND FIELD
During Saturday’s annual Andover Boosters Invitational, St. John’s Prep’s Lincoln Massaro posted the Eagles’ top finish, finishing runner-up in the 400 hurdles with a PR 56.35. Aithan Bezanson finished third (PR 56.53) and Noah Kael finished fifth (PR 57.96). Kye McCoy finished third in the javelin (158-04). Andrew Bertucci (6-0), Tyson Stroope (PR 6-0) and Gio Moretti (5-10) finished third, fourth, and sixth, respectively, in the high jump.
In the long jump, Tireni Asengua (PR 21-09.05), Merrick Barlow (PR 21-04.75) and Andrew Vigneaux (school record 21-02.25) finished third, fourth, and sixth, respectively. Ahmir Hykel placed fourth in the 200 (22.84) with Sam Charrette coming in seventh (23.11) and Kevin Vaughn placing eighth (PR 23.12). Andrew McManmon finished fourth in the triple jump (PR 41-08) and Pierson Scala finished eighth (PR 40-07.5). Vaughn (PR 11.23), Brendan Burke (11.27) and Barlow finished fifth, seventh, and 10th, respectively, in the 100 dash. The 4×100 relay team of Jayden Toppin, Scala, Aaron Radke and Kai Danoff finished ninth (44.90).
