Marblehead’s volleyball team (16-2) went into rival Swampscott’s gym and left with a 3-1 win to capture the Northeastern Conference title Thursday, Oct. 23. The Magicians went undefeated (12-0) in conference play after defeating the Big Blue 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 27-25.
Erin Wilder had a team-high 26 assists, while Mari Modrzynska did a bit of everything with 12 kills and 11 digs. Greta Sachs tallied eight kills and six blocks, while Sydney Faris had 28 digs on defense.

The Magicians ended their regular season with a hard-fought draw against the Crusaders. Carolyn Black opened the scoring for Marblehead in the third quarter, and Chloe Rowland — off a Zoe Dwyer assist — added the Magicians’ second in the fourth.
Elizabeth Hayes made seven saves in net.
“This was a fun one and an absolute team effort from beginning to end,” said Marblehead coach Alison Carey. “I am so proud of the way the team played tonight. It’s been quite a season.”

Hailey Gilmore made seven saves to help Marblehead salvage a tie against the Chieftains. Sydney Ball and Ainsley McDonald anchored the defense.
“We have sustained multiple injuries this season and our team has persevered through it all. We bent, but did not break,” said Marblehead coach Lisa Wales. “To say how proud our coaching staff is . . . hard to put into words. The grit, resolve, heart, and untiring effort we have seen from our players is simply incredible. They are a special group on and off the field.”

St. John’s Prep junior JJ Koulalis scored a goal in each half to lead the Eagles past Leominster on the road. Mike Hutchinson assisted Koulalis’ second goal, and senior goalie Matt Droggitis made four saves for his 12th shutout of the season. St. John’s Prep improved to 14-1-2 ahead of the state tournament.

Call it a thrilling comeback. Marblehead held a 42-25 lead in the fourth quarter before Masconomet stormed back on home turf. Jack Fabiano of the Chieftains scored the game-winning touchdown with 18 seconds remaining. Marblehead attempted a late field goal, but the ball went wide as the Magicians (6-1) lost their first game of the season.

Malden Catholic jumped out to a 7-0 lead against St. John’s Prep, but the visiting Eagles (7-0) found their stride from there. Christopher Vargas threw three touchdowns, while Maxwell Parents rushed for another.
