Despite two doubles losses, a singles sweep lifted the Marblehead boys tennis team to a 3-2 victory over host Swampscott. Mika Garber, Etan Farfel, and Jayden Janock (singles debut) were victorious.
“It was a nail-biter until the end. Both first and second singles lost their respective first sets, but came through, winning their third sets decisively,” said Marblehead coach Elisabeth Foukal. “Good sportsmanship was displayed on all the courts and it was an excellent match.”
The Marblehead girls team – dropping no sets – scored its first Northeastern Conference win with Swampscott in town. Maddie Conlon, Aviva Bornstein, and Sami Dosch were victorious in singles, while the doubles duos of Aoife Bresnahan-Lucia Levin and Lani Gilmore-Nina Johnson got the job done in doubles.
“Today was a great NEC win for us,” said Marblehead coach Tracy Ackerman. “Frankly, we were all really disappointed with our loss to Beverly this week – that loss really stung. The girls really focused on practice and made less unforced errors than the previous match against Beverly. Sometimes, it takes a bad loss to get motivated, and that is what happened to us this week.”

Newburyport 8
Marblehead 1
Chris Cannuscio (1-for-3) of the Magicians roped an RBI, but that’s as good as it got for Marblehead, which welcomed the Clippers to Seaside Park for a Tuesday matinee. Newburyport outhit the hosts, 7-4, and its pitchers racked up 13 strikeouts collectively.
Riley Schmitt, Charlie Sachs, and Cameron Quigley connected on hits for Marblehead, while Matt Mahan punched out two and allowed just one earned run across four innings.
Peabody 6
Marblehead 3
A pitch count limit (116) prevented a complete game from Peabody’s Cam Connolly, but he tossed 6 2/3 innings in the Tanners’ 6-3 win against Marblehead. He allowed just four hits and punched out 11 Magicians.
SOFTBALL
Marblehead 4
Gloucester 2
If you ask Marblehead coach Johnny Gold, “The story was catcher Luka Bornhorst.” All she did was throw a runner out while hitting a two-run triple in the fifth inning.
It was a team effort, however. Tessa Andriano knocked in two runs with a double for the Magicians (3-0).
BOYS LACROSSE

Danvers 10
Despite Danvers holding a 10-8 advantage late in the third quarter, the Marblehead laxmen (2-2) scored 10 unanswered goals en route to their second win of the season.
Reece Moore (4 goals) netted the game-winning strike early in the fourth quarter. Offensively, he was followed by Cam Waldman (4 goals), Will Sullivan (3 goals, 4 assists), Jack Whipple (2 goals, 2 assists), and Greg Motorny (3 goals).
Finn Gallup – per usual – played a strong game in net for Marblehead.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Marblehead 16
Danvers 7
The Magicians, 1-3, picked up their first win of the spring, doubling up Danvers on home turf Saturday morning. Talk about consistency – the victors scored eight goals in each half.
“We played well today,” said Marblehead coach Annie Madden. “The defense was communicating and the offense moved the ball quickly up the field. I’m proud of how we are coming together as a team.”
Ramona Gillett (6 goals) and Maddie Forbes (5) led the offensive barrage, while Kathryn Commoss went home with a hat trick. Rachel Delisle and Chloe Rowland also scored, while Caroline Scroope dished out two assists and Kate Burns scooped up three ground balls. Molly Bullard was strong between the pipes with five saves.
Swampscott 16
Marblehead 9
Talk about a hot start. Swampscott upped its record to 4-0 after besting traditional archrival Marblehead in enemy waters. Sophia Ciciotti (5 goals) and Avery Laundry (4) combined for more than half of Swampscott’s goals.
Coco Clopton ripped a hat trick, Cecilia Tripp added a pair, and both Samantha Demady and Victoria Pierro found twine, too. Swampscott visits Salem on Monday.
Taking positives from a negative, Gretchen Smith (4 goals), Maddie Forbes (2), and Kathryn Commoss (2) led the Magicians (0-3), who also received 16 big saves from Molly Bullard.
