Thursday evening (Sept. 26) was a good one for the Marblehead volleyballers, who took care of Danvers, 3-1, in scores of 23-25, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-17.
After dropping the first game, Marblehead coach Killeen Miller said passing and serving became “much stronger.”
Greta Sachs (12 kills, 3 aces, 5 blocks) led the way for the Magicians, followed by Sammy Walker, who “played one of her best games of the season,” according to Miller, with nine kills, nine digs, and three blocks.

Greyson Leventhal was the only Marblehead golfer to win his match, doing so in 5-4 fashion against the Panthers. Jacob Hershfield (36) tied his match, 4-5-4.5, and went home a medalist.

The Prep upped its record to 9-1 with a narrow win against Catholic Memorial, a familiar opponent for the Eagles. Seamus O’Holleran and Jack Moriarty led the charge, each shooting 37s.

Marblehead delivered an offensive explosion against Salem. Sydney Ball (2 goals), Courtney Hitscherich (2), and Lucy McDonald ripped twine.
Dishing out assists were Lucy Church (2), Nora Mahan (first varsity point), McDonald, and Callie Gilmore. Lily Heller picked up a save for Marblehead.
Hitscherich added to her goal-scoring total with her fourth and fifth goals. According to Marblehead coach Lisa Wales, Ashley Mortensen played a strong game in the midfield, while Ainsley McDonald and Ava Machado “continue to anchor our defense.
“This was our sixth game in the past two weeks, with five of those games being on the road,” Wales said. “We have faced some adversity and key injuries, and to get a team win today was a terrific way to close out this two-week stretch. We are now 4-3-3 and ready to take on Peabody Tuesday.”

A month into the season, and The Prep remains undefeated. The Eagles cruised, 28-0, past La Salle (Rhode Island) at Glatz Field in a Saturday matinee. Deacon Robillard ran for 1- and 2-yard rushing scores to lead the hosts.
Gael Garcia hauled in a 46-yard touchdown pass from Chris Vargas, while Lucas Pelletier took an interception 28 yards to the promised land to round out the scoring. Jeff Quigley led Prep’s ground game with 15 carries for 112 yards and Pierson Scala took charge of the aerial attack with a 59-yard reception.
Talk about a versatile offensive attack – seven Eagles caught passes Saturday afternoon.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Marblehead boys defeated Winthrop, 15-50, at Gatchell’s Park on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Led by senior David Alpert who took home first place, the Magicians remained perfect at 4-0. Better yet, they took the top-five spots (Jacob Szalewicz, Will Cerrutti, Nate Assa, Jared Potach).
On the girls’ (3-1) side, a 17-42 win on the 3.05-mile course, Marblehead’s Marri O’Connell rolled to first once again, followed closely by teammates Ruby Assa and Evelina Beletsky in second and third, respectively. Coming in shortly after the lead pack, in fourth place, was Evie Becker.
