Marblehead kicked off its Hanukkah celebrations this season with a community menorah lighting and continued over the weekend with a Hanukkah event at Temple Emanu-El, all happening in preparation for the holiday to begin on Dec. 25.
The menorah lighting, held on the lawn of National Grand Bank on Pleasant Street, brought the community together to celebrate the Festival of Lights. The evening’s festivities featured a chorus of children and adults, led in song by local participants. Everyone sang beloved Hanukkah songs, including the classic “Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel.”
Rabbi Jenn Mangold of Temple Emanu-El and Rabbi Michael Schwartz of Temple Sinai shared insightful reflections on Hanukkah’s themes of miracles, resilience, and the power of light. Their words set the tone for a cheerful and inclusive evening, bringing people of all backgrounds together.
A highlight of the evening came when National Grand Bank President Jim Nye joined in to help flip the switch, officially lighting the towering menorah. As the menorah shined bright the crowd erupted in cheers to celebrate the soon arrival of Hanukkah.
The celebrations continued with a special Hanukkah event at Temple Emanu-El on Saturday where families gathered for a communal menorah lighting. The event included singing, games, and activities for children, creating a festive atmosphere for families to enjoy.
Throughout the holiday, Marblehead’s Jewish community has embraced the season’s warmth with other events. The menorah lighting at National Grand Bank and Temple Emanu-El’s festive gathering serve as important reminders of the power of light.
