State grants Temple Sinai nearly $100k for security

October 30, 2024 by Benjamin Pierce

Gov. Maura Healey and her administration announced it has awarded approximately $7.8 million worth of federal funds to 56 nonprofits throughout the Commonwealth, and Temple Sinai of Swampscott and Marblehead is one of them.

The grants were distributed through The Nonprofit Security Grant Program, which has the purpose of helping recipients prevent hate crimes and terror attacks. It is funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and administered in the state by the Office of Grants and Research.

Temple Sinai received $99,674. Earlier this year, it also received $75,000 from the state.

“There are a lot of antisemitic incidents that have been going on throughout the country,” Temple President Barbara Rosenstroch said. “People want to make sure that their children are going to be safe… in their synagogue when they come to our activities or to Shabbat services.”

According to OGR, all recipients were selected through a competitive application process that was approved by FEMA.

“These faith-based and community nonprofits play such a critical role in our communities, and we are proud to deliver this funding that will help them implement security measures to keep their residents safe and ensure peace of mind,” Healey said in a press release. “We’re grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration for making this funding available to ensure these organizations can continue to serve those who depend on them, without fear or interruption.”
