Marblehead strike settled

November 26, 2024 by Grace Calandrella

After two weeks of missed school in Marblehead, the School Committee and Marblehead Education Association (MEA) have made tentative agreements, allowing educators and students to return to school on Wednesday.

Both the School Committee and MEA were radio silent for most of Tuesday as negotiations continued. Meanwhile, the community remained on standby, waiting for updates.

However, at 6:45 p.m, the MEA and School Committee released a joint statement announcing the good news. “We are committed to ensuring that the reopening of our schools will be a positive experience for our students and school community,” the statement read.

At 7:15 p.m., the MEA held its usual press conference outside Marblehead High School.

MEA Co-President Jonathan Heller began the press conference with joy, saying, “I am here tonight to let you know that tomorrow the students and educators of the Marblehead Public Schools will be back in the classrooms!”

This statement was met with a loud round of applause from the educators and community members in attendance.

At 8 p.m., the School Committee also held its press conference. Co-Chair Jenn Schaeffner called the four-year agreement a “win-win” for both parties.

Schaeffner also addressed the new door that has been opened regarding the need for an override. “We are going to have a lot of work to do, we’re going to need you to come out when it comes time,” Schaeffner said, referring to community members.

The School Committee also gave high praise to Mike Giardi, an MEA member and Marblehead High School coach. The Committee mentioned that while it had been a long day, Giardi had been critical towards helping the parties reach an agreement.

Students will return to school on Wednesday, where their educators will be happily waiting for them upon arrival.
