FALMOUTH — Marblehead’s cross country teams traveled down to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds Saturday night to compete in the Bob Glennon Twilight Invitational.
The boys put on a show and finished second overall. Will Cerrutti and Nate Assa took first and second, respectively, in the medium school varsity race with times of 15:21.04 and 15:26.26.
“Will broke the existing school record (15:21.2 set by AJ Ernst) and Nate is now third in school history,” said coach Will Herlihy. “Jacob Szalewicz also medaled, finishing 20th in a speedy 16:22.7.”
The girls finished 16th, but not without strong performances. Marrietta O’Connell finished second in the medium school varsity race (18:00.64).
Marblehead’s top five runners finished in less than 23 minutes, and top seven in less than 24 minutes. The finishing order consisted of Ruby Assa (21:55.48), Evelina Beletsky (22:06.98), Abbie Goodwin (22:24.76), Evie Becker (22:43.97), Mary Donnellan (23:26.99), and Maren Potter (23:35.24).
“The girls finished 16th as a team, but that understates how impressive these times are across the board,” Herlihy said.
