The Task Force Against Discrimination held a Multicultural Dance Celebration to ring in its 35th anniversary.
Task Force Co-Chair Helaine Hazlett started the event with a speech.
“Although the task force was founded as a result of an act of antisemitism, the task force is proud to be more proactive than reactive. The Task Force against Discrimination has grown to celebrate diversity, and Marblehead is recognized by the Anti-Defamation League as a No Place for Hate community,” Hazlett said.
Hazlett said that the task force supports many different programs throughout the year, such as Holocaust Remembrance Day, observed in January; Black History Month; an Asian American Pacific Islander event in May; Pride Month; and Juneteenth.
“Members of the task force wrote the land-acknowledgement statement adopted by Town Meeting,” Hazlett said.
“The task force looks forward to our town coming out to celebrate this milestone and the diversity of our community,” Hazlett added.
At the Jacobi Community Center on Sunday, attendees performed dances from different cultures.
Alongside Hazlett was her co-chair on the task force, Diane Gora, as well as Select Board Chair Erin Noonan, who danced with attendees.
Greg Coles led attendees in the Dominican Republic’s bachata and salsa styles of dance, alongside Laine Goodman and Jane Mikityansky, who shared Israeli styles of dance, leaving attendees in good spirits.
