Teacher/coach/athletic director Alex Kulevich to be honored

July 16, 2025 by Joey Barrett

The Alexander W. Kulevich Jr. Athletic Complex, which overlooks Piper Field on Humphrey Street, will be dedicated Friday. The ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m. and will be outside, unless weather conditions interfere.

The legendary Kulevich arrived at Marblehead High in 1970 as a history teacher and the head football coach (54-52 record, five winning seasons). He then became athletic director for more than 20 years.

“The whole thing is unbelievable,” said Kulevich, a member of the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association and Marblehead Gridiron halls of fame. “I’m overjoyed. People have been so nice and supportive.”

And from now on, a new generation will look up to the Kulevich name.

“I’m just happy I’ve gotten to be a part of the student-athletes’ lives,” Kulevich said. “I think we have a really good athletic program and now, my wife (Barbara) and I are still a part of it. I’m looking forward to seeing Marblehead do well – that won’t change.”

This past March, the Marblehead School Committee voted unanimously in favor of naming the athletic complex after Kulevich.
