Tower School’s second grade science classes took home a first place ribbon for their homegrown eggplants at last week’s Topsfield Fair. This past spring Science teacher Deb Eames and her second grade class planted the Chinese Elongated Eggplant seeds in the school greenhouse and transferred seedlings to garden beds. When Fall arrived and the next school year started, the newest second graders took on the mantle and harvested the vegetables.
“Our campus has a greenhouse and raised garden bed that support an agricultural curriculum,” said Stephanie Curtis, the Tower School Director of Marketing and Communication. “Students in all grades collectively grow herbs, berries, and vegetables from seeds in the greenhouse, then transfer them to the raised garden beds. In addition, they plant and maintain native pollinator gardens to support the health of bees and butterflies.”
