On Friday, Jan. 26, the town will be commemorating its second annual Holocaust Remembrance Day, starting at noon in the Select Board’s office at Abbot Hall.
In 2005, the United Nations officially designated Jan. 27 in remembrance and to commemorate the lives of the more than 6 million Jews and millions of others who were killed by the Nazi regime between 1933 and 1945. Jan. 27 marks the day that the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated in 1945.
Last year, the Marblehead Select Board proclaimed the day as Holocaust Remembrance Day and recognized the month of January as Holocaust Education Month.
The Jan. 26 ceremony will begin with a candlelight ceremony, along with a reading of the proclamation by Select Board Chair Pro Tempore Moses Grader.
This year’s event has been organized by Rabbi Michael Schwartz of Temple Sinai. At 6 p.m., Schwartz will conduct the Friday evening service in memory of the victims of the Holocaust at Temple Sinai, located at 1 Community Road. Grader will be a guest speaker at the service.
All community members are invited and encouraged to attend both the afternoon and evening ceremonies.
