Join Judy Anderson of Marblehead Architecture Heritage & Tours at 1 p.m. for a historic walk through Fort Sewall. Marblehead’s Fort Sewall was enlarged to its current footprint in 1775, as the Revolutionary War’s 8 long years began –– though it wasn’t called Fort Sewall (after Mhd.’s Judge Samuel Sewall) until about 1800. Established in 1644, Marblehead’s defensive fort was renovated six different times, during six different wars. Owned and funded by the English Parliament before 1775, and by the U.S. after 1776, each renovation was overseen by two professional military engineers. Meet at Fort Beach on Front Street.

Paciencia y Fe

2 p.m.

In celebration of kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month, Paciencia y Fe (Patience and Faith) features Latine musicians performing songs from Evita, Man of La Mancha, The Capeman, The Addams Family, Coco, Encanto, In the Heights, and many more. While the Latine experience is non-monolithic, these songs told through the lived experiences of these performers highlight the complex intersection of heritage and culture found throughout the Latin American diaspora. Co-conceived by Alexandra Dietrich and Nathan Rodriguez, this performance will be a fundraiser for the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, a next-generation social justice 501(c)(3) charitable organization law firm that defends our immigrant communities against injustices in the immigration system. Admission is free, $20 donation recommended.

Rare opportunity! A guided tour through the home of one of Marblehead’s few Loyalists, Robert “King” Hooper (1709 – 1790), explaining his Loyalist stance, and the tragedies of his long life and wealth. It will also focus on his extensive family: 4 wives (in sequence), 11 children (all by one wife ~ his second, married 28 years), and 4 step-children (brought to the household by his third wife, who was twice widowed, just as Hooper had been). Plus some interior architecture: Georgian period (c.1750) bedrooms, two early cellar kitchens, a Federal-period front parlor (early 1800s), and a 3rd-floor Federal era ballroom. Meet in front of the King Hooper Mansion.

Marblehead on the Eve of Revolution

3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Enjoy a walking tour of downtown Marblehead focusing on the mid-1700s, as the American Revolution gained momentum –– when the gritty but thriving international Atlantic seaport was British North America’s sixth most populous metropolis. The town’s zealous and nearly fully rebel (Patriot) service in the 8-year war –– on land at first, and then at sea, caused an economic crash that preserved much of the 18th-century townscape seen today, including a rare early (1727-29) municipal “Town House” that separated church and state very early on, and approximately 300 houses built before 1775, out of about 525 that stood then. Meet in front of Abbot Hall.

Monday, Sept. 16
