On Saturday, the VFW is inviting community members to a viewing of one of college football’s best traditions.
Veterans, residents, and any others interested are invited to the VFW, located at 321 W Shore Dr., at 3 p.m. to watch the annual Army-Navy football game. The event is free, and doors will open at 2:30 p.m. This year, the 124th meeting between the two rivals will take place in Foxborough at Gillette Stadium.
“It just doesn’t have to be members of the VFW, it can be anybody from the town,” Army/Air Force veteran Ronny Knight said. “As I like to tell people, if you’ve ever heard of the Army, if you’ve ever heard of the Navy, if you’ve ever served in the Army, if you’ve ever served in the Navy, this is the place you want to be.”
This is the VFW’s first watch party for the big game and though the event is centered around the match taking place on the field, it serves as an opportunity for veterans and nonveterans to connect and get to know each other.
“It just builds camaraderie,” Knight said. “It makes the town recognize ‘Hey, we’ve got an important population, it might be small, but it’s an important population. Why can’t we all come out and celebrate?’”
“You don’t have to be a veteran to come up to the VFW this upcoming Saturday to celebrate the game,” he added.
At halftime, the VFW will provide pizza for those in attendance.
Knight encouraged people to attend and meet with Army veterans, and teased that it wouldn’t hurt to meet with Navy veterans either.
“Come on in and root on your favorite team, meet some new people, shake hands with an Army vet or, God forbid, a Navy vet,” Knight joked.
