The Marblehead volleyball team lost a tough match to Woburn on Monday, 3-1, dropping to 3-2 on the young season.
Despite the loss, Mari Modrzynska had nine kills, while Deysha Amadis had four and four blocks. Megan Parkman had seven digs for the Magicians. Head coach Killeen Miller also described Sydney Faris as a “force” on serve receive.
Five days earlier on Wednesday, in set scores of 25-11, 25-6, and 25-8, the Magicians (3-1) conquered the Winthrop Vikings. Parkman had seven aces and three digs, Amadis added six kills, and Eva Burke dished out nine assists.

Another win and another shutout for the Magicians (3-1), who beat Peabody 2-0 in the pouring rain on Monday.
The Magicians led 1-0 at the half thanks to a solid finish from Sadie Halpern, her third of the season. Then, in the second half, it was Ashley Mortensen who scored the all-important second goal to give the Magicians their third victory.
CROSS COUNTRY
Marblehead’s boys cross country team (2-0) defeated Beverly 24-32 at Gatchell Park on Wednesday, Sept. 13. The boys were led by a 1-2-3 finish from Isaac Gross, Nate Assa, and Will Cerrutti. Henrik Adams and Jonah Potach also ran well.
On the girls side, the Magicians (2-0) won 25-31. Marrietta O’Connell took first place (19:40) – only 15 seconds away from the course record set by Beverly in 2019 – and Caterina Piper finished third in (21:46), shaving nearly a minute off her personal best time on the course. Maren Potter, Shannon Hitscherich, Jesslyn Roemer, Abbie Goodwin, and Avery Barbeau rounded out the top seven.
“It was a true team win,” Marblehead coach William Herlihy said.

The St. John’s Prep football team (2-0) hung on to dear life Saturday afternoon at Glatz Field in Danvers, but come the final whistle, the Eagles remained perfect in the win column.
In another year helmed by former NFL and Boston College quarterback Brian St. Pierre, his Eagles flew over Central Catholic 30-28.
Senior Dylan Aliberti racked up 200 yards of total offense alongside three touchdowns. Fellow senior Cam LaGrassa wasn’t bad, either, racking up 113 yards and a touchdown.
The Prep had double the first downs (18-9), and Grayson Ambrosh snatched an interception on the defensive side.
The Eagles’ first win was a 41-20 thrashing of Marshfield, and they host Haverhill Friday at 6 p.m.

The Magicians (5-0) keep on winning, this time defeating the Salem Witches Thursday, Sept. 14. All eight of Marblehead’s players won their match.
Marty Ryan shot a 36 and won every hole against his opponent. In addition to Ryan, James Bickell and Joy Meshulam both swept their opponents. Bickell shot a 38, while Meshulam finished with a 47.

Despite no goals through 60 minutes of play, the St. John’s Prep soccer team bounced back from Thursday’s shutout loss against BC High with a 3-0 win against Silver Lake at home on Saturday.
