Marblehead’s girls soccer team took advantage of its home turf at Piper Field on Saturday, sending Lynnfield home with a 3-0 defeat.
Truth be told, it wasn’t as easy as the final score might’ve indicated. The Pioneers controlled the action for 20 minutes of play, according to Marblehead coach Lisa Wales.
“This was our first game in over a week and we started a little slow,” she said. “We called a timeout to reset and it worked, and we were able to settle into our game.”
Settle in, they did.
Junior Courtney Hitscherich scored her seventh goal of the season to get things started – this one from Liv Carlson, who came in off the bench and helped spark some life into the hosts.
“Liv has worked incredibly hard to come back from multiple injuries this season,” Wales said. “To see her hard work pay off is really rewarding.”
Fifteen minutes later, make it 2-0 after freshman Lucy McDonald (6 goals) scored from the 20-yard line after a scuffle in front of the net. The highlight-reel goal came after a corner kick.
In the second half, sophomore Callie Gilmore scored unassisted on a free kick, giving her 13 goals this season to lead Marblehead.
“Hailey Gilmore had a terrific save in the second half and was solid in net all game long to secure the shutout,” Wales said. “Ava Machado, Sydney Ball, and Cam O’Brien all had terrific games defensively.”
Marblehead upped its record to 9-4-4 (press time).
