GLOUCESTER — Despite a small roster for Marblehead’s indoor track and field teams, you could say the freshmen-sophomore meet at Gloucester High was a success. The boys (89 points) finished second behind Swampscott (93), while the girls (56) placed second behind Peabody (99).
“It was a competitive meet with a lot of great performances,” said Marblehead coach Nolain Raimo. “This is a great sign for the future of the track program.”
Clark Roszell delivered with a 5-8 clearance to finish second in high jump.
“Clark began jumping this season for the first time as a freshman, following success in the long sprints in middle-school track,” Raimo said.
Logan McRae-Hughes was the only male shot-putter throwing for Marblehead, but put on a show with a fourth-place personal record of 36-4.75.
Cate Cole finished eighth in long jump (13-11), while Ryan Corrigan was the boys winner with a leap of 19-9.
“As a freshman, Cate has competed in the long jump, triple jump, 55-meter hurdles, and high jump all within the first month of her track career – impressive,” Raimo said.
In the 55-meter hurdles, Noah Jackson set a modern-day meet record with a time of 8.63 to win the event. Lucy Flynn finished second in the 55-meter dash (PR 7.65).
“Lucy battled an injury last indoor season, which sidelined her for most of the season,” Raimo said. “She returned this indoor season with an impressive start.”
As for the 300-meter, Phoebe Fontela-Tuttle continued her successful freshman season with a new personal record of 49.52, good for sixth place. Eben Weed ran an outstanding race on a flat 150-meter track to finish second (42.47).
In the 600-meter, Maggie Miller (1:50.67, 1-second PR) and Norah Walsh (1:57.78) picked
up “a huge 14 points for the team,” according to Raimo, with second- and third-place finishes, respectively.
As for the 1,000-meter, Sarah Munroe’s time of 3:20.45 (2nd) was a massive 14-second PR and qualified her for the Division 3 state championship meet later this season.
Jesslyn Roemer (2nd, 13:14.19) was the lone Magician competing in the 2-mile. Corrigan, Harrison Carpineto, Jack Franklin, and Ethan Harwood won the 4×200-meter relay in 1:47.28.
