Marblehead’s field hockey team (0-1) welcomed Malden Catholic to Piper Field Tuesday afternoon. Despite a 3-0 loss on the scoreboard, it was far from the entire story, according to first-year coach Ali Carey.
“But as I tell my team, the scoreboard doesn’t always reflect the effort players put in and I am incredibly proud of the way the team played.”
Goalie Elizabeth Hayes played well between the pipes with seven saves, while Marblehead’s defense “did a commendable job of defending on corners,” according to Carey.
“Avery Wysor, in particular, was extremely effective as a flyer,” Carey said. “That’s a tough position to play and she is absolutely fearless when it comes to putting pressure on the opposing team.”
Carey also pointed to last week’s scrimmage with the Lynnfield Pioneers, which offered gameplay perspective for the girls.
“We spent the week working hard in practice to get into the habit of playing the whole field and creating opportunities for passes, as well as boosting our communication on the field. The team’s hard work showed in our game.”
The Magicians are right back at it against Bishop Fenwick Thursday. The action is slated for 4 p.m. at Piper Field.
