Marblehead’s track and field team kicked off the month with a meet against Swampscott and Masconomet on Wednesday, May 1. Both the boys and girls fell to Masco, but defeated the Big Blue.
Alex Hersey made Marblehead history in the triple jump with a 42-2.5, breaking the previous record of 41-7 set in 2012.
“Alex launched a massive jump at the end of last season at the decathlon that was, unfortunately, a foul, and it was great to see him land a monster jump like this,” said Marblehead coach Nolan Raimo.
Rachael Albert – who also finished second in javelin – took second in the discus with a throw of 104-4, falling to (arguably) her closest competitor in the conference in Sophia Doumas of Masco, whom Albert beat last week. On the boys’ side, Tucker Crane hit a personal record with a throw of 97-10.
In the shot put, Lillian Reddy came in second, throwing a strong 28-9.
Nate Assa ran “a great race,” according to coach Will Herlihy, to win the 2-mile in a time of 10:24.9.
“At times, especially in distance races in the regular season, it’s important to just win the race, and Assa – who is capable of running 9:40 in the 2-mile – controlled the race from the start,” Herlihy added.
Cat Piper battled for a second-place finish in a time of 13:00.7 for the girls.
And in the mile, it was all red and black.
“Isaac Gross and Will Cerrutti, two of the best distance runners in the state, ran away from the rest of the field,” Herlihy said. “Isaac finished first, 4:36.3, and Will finished second, 4:36.9.”
The 100m was a Marblehead success, too, with Sadie Halpern placing first (12.9), Ava Machado following in second (13.0) and Cora Gerson sliding into the action for sixth (13.7).
Raimo, on the boys’ end, added “Thomas Carlson remains the fastest sprinter in the NEC (Northeastern Conference), running sub-11 to win the dash, 10.9.”
Grace Mortenson secured first in the 400mh (76.7), Alex Hersey did so for the boys (61.2), and Paige Tredwell placed first in the 100mh/110mh (PR 16.6).
Leaping over to the long jump, “Paige jumped 16-7 to finish second and shatter her PR by over
a foot,” as said by Raimo.
“Paige was frustrated with her long jump at State Relays. It was freezing cold, and she rebounded well with a great jump,” Raimo added.
And in the boys’ 4×400, Xavier Grazado, Henrik Adams, Eben Weed, and Ethan Horgan finished second with a time of 3:52.5.
